Pilot PMR is a mid-sized public relations agency based on The Esplanade in Toronto. We represent some of the world’s leading brands, delivering smart and effective communications initiatives for a variety of products, people and services. We’ve been described as original, intuitive and collaborative.
We work with a wide range of brands, corporations, associations and non-for-profit groups. While communications can and does support virtually every public business entity, we tend to specialize in consumer goods, and food & beverage. Of course, our principles and approach are applied to an array of clients looking to tell their story.
With two floors here at Pilot, each floor thinks they have a better vibe going throughout the day. Let’s just say guests have heard everything from Mozart to Motorhead to Madonna, and everything in between. Lately, there’s been a lot of Elvis on the 2nd floor.
Tough one. Some of our work requires a delicate approach and carefully thought out execution, while sometimes it’s all about the visual and creating a crazy scene. In staying with crazy as a theme, we once rented a tugboat in Toronto Harbour, hired a police boat and literally tested a “flotation suitcase” that was supposed to save ocean travelers from nautical disasters – all in the name of promoting The Re-Inventors TV show. PS – The water-proof suit, which folded out of a fairly conventional suitcase, did float and our Re-Inventor returned to land safe and sound … media loved it!
We like to think we stand out, as opposed to fitting in. Our agency regularly matches up against multinationals and is also small enough to provide a handcrafted level of service. While we do have our areas of specialty, ultimately we feel a good client fit comes down to a cultural connection. If you like us and our approach, you will also like working with us and our ideas.
We’re all armed with the latest and greatest from the folks in Waterloo, Ont. In this case, it’s about supporting Canadian innovation.
Any time we can gather in the boardroom and brainstorm as a team for a client or new business opportunity – well, that’s a good thing. Let’s face it, there’s not too many places to work that regularly ask people to drop what they’re doing to meet and help come up with the company’s next big idea! It can be very empowering and inspiring.
Not for a long time now. It’s not that we don’t like and appreciate freelancers, it’s just that we feel it’s critical to create a certain amount of continuity with the way we approach our work. Also, we believe in organically growing Pilot, so when the time is right, we hire people who bring something great to the table.
There is no position or rank for public relations, but there is always a place for it regardless of your reason to reach out to audiences. Not only is it our job to spearhead those initiatives, it’s also our responsibility to advise clients when public relations should lead a program and when it should complement a program.
Bellissimo’s pizza.
The first part – Pilot – is symbolic in that it’s a person and an occupation where people need to place some trust and responsibility. PMR stands for Public and Market Relations, basically an extension of the traditional PR tag. The addition of Market acts as a reminder to us of what our clients face in their worlds on a daily basis – the market they compete within.
To clarify, we’re all stranded on the same island? That’s interesting in itself. Hmmm … Quick survey reveals it would be The Beatles: The White Album (it’s not cheating because it’s a double album, that’s called creating content! That’s what we do …)
Pilot PMR is located in Toronto’s historic Berkeley Castle. Built in 1861, Berkeley Castle is home to a vibrant entrepreneurial community, housing some of the city’s most creative companies. In fact, our suite (107) was a recording studio for more than 30 years before we moved in and renovated.

Digital – interactive, online, social media, call it what you will – plays a role in virtually every campaign rolled out here at Pilot. What’s important to note is that within each campaign, various aspect of public relations hold a different weight. Sometimes, digital will lead the way, while other times digital complements a larger program.
From a public relations standpoint, we work with client brands every day. We promote them, defend them, launch them and position them. On another level, Pilot also helps new and emerging companies create and launch brands, as well as assist established groups re-position their brands in the market.
Pilot PR was started by partner Joe Romagnolo in 2002. Soon after, he was joined by partner David Doze, who owned and operated PMR Consulting. Voila – Pilot PMR.
Do you have a product or service to promote and sell? A brand to introduce, grow or defend? Do you have an audience to communicate to? Do you have issues to manage? Are there perceptions that need changing? Is there a milestone approaching? Are you changing the way you do business? Is the competition applying pressure? Are you trying to raise money, profile, or interest? Are you trying to change public opinion? These are a handful of examples … If you can answer yes to one of these questions, public relations will definitely help drive your efforts.
Thanks for the interest! Let’s start by having you drop a CV and a short note to team@pilotpmr.com and we can take it from there. We’re always looking for smart, inspiring people to complement our great staff here at Pilot.
Yes. In fact, we have recently managed several projects for a range of clients in the United States, including Bauer Hockey, Liberty Water and JetSet Aviation.
